[...] I think that he is right to say that the little grades don’t matter, because except for looking “good” on your transcript, getting an “A” wont help a bit when you’re forced to face new real-life situations that you would have been more apt to deal with after interacting and analyzing a work. And I feel that in the first semester of English we really did gain something much much more than just an “A” out of the pieces that we read. Mr. Olmstead offers another great insight, saying that it was virtually impossible for students to construct something that has value outside of the immediate classroom. Great lessons and projects usually end with a grade; rarely do they progress beyond the school setting. For this reason, one of the single biggest complaints that students have about school is its lack of relevance to their own lives or the world outside the school house gates.
[...] I’m beginning to see how it all fits together–the classroom environment, the shift in focus from work in isolation to work in a global community, the paper load of an English or social studies teacher. I think Evan Olmstead hit it out of the park with this post: Teach quality content, model good communication, and guide students as they create their own valuable addition to the discipline at hand. In this way education may become a place where students are a part of the real world, rather than waiting to enter it. As educators, we need to recognize this opportunity and use it to change the face of education. The classroom up until now has been a hypothetical space – let’s make it real.
Generally speaking, educational decisions that are made in Washington DC and not the local school district are not in the best interests of education. They may serve politicians well, but not kids. Bad things generally happen when politicians make decisions for education.

It's so stupid, denying the trials, because the faster they do the trials the faster they can deal with the terrorists (or ones who they think are terrorists). I was actually talking about this with my family last night, about how awful Bush is as a president, and then my dad brought up Nixon and how JFK was so much better than him. I sat there thinking, "what is he talking about?! JFK invaded Vietnam, just like Bush invaded Iraq!" and then of course I told my dad this and he just said "wow. I didn't realize how liberal you were, kim." yup, i am, but it's more for humanitarian sake. i hate when people are abused and mistreated and the fact is that whatever Bush wants to call them, the detainees are still people and deserved to be treated with justice...like being given a trial date...and that isn't as hard as it may seem.

I believe that everyone is equal and counts as a person. But it’s hard, because, not everyone has the same rights or even rights at all. One person may think they have all the rights and use a gun; they take the rights away from someone by killing them. And thats what is going on right now. the government think they have all the powere and can take away the rights of the suspects, just beacuse they are the governt, and dat why I think bush has no idea what he is doing, he is a bad president, and I think its time he give everyone fair trails.

yea im going to have to agree with Deniz on this one. I mean it might not be the information that is going to be used in the trails but protectin the country from the people inprisoned. And tim, the US isn't just throwing every arab into prison and flashing our big guns around. Yes we might to that in other cirrcustances but mostly every person at Guantanumo right now have had their backrounds checked and there has been something shady about it.
